THE BLOG and THE BLOGGER
Who? My full name is Sophie Alicia Jackson Brooks – contact me here.
What? I am a third and final year student at Sheffield Hallam University. This blog is part of a portfolio for my degree in Media.
Where? I’m from Sheffield, so I’ve stayed at home during university. Although I did live in Nottingham for seven years, so I grew up with a more polished midlands accent - but it soon changed when I entered a Yorkshire playground.
When? My birthday is the 8th of June, which makes me a Gemini. My star sign always gets the blame when I can’t make a decision – which happens a lot, especially when deciding what to call this blog!
The posts reveal my own style in fashion and life with references from iconic toys from certain decades. Take a quick peek:
• Barbie (50s)
• My Little Pony (80s)
• Furby (90s)
• Bratz (00s)
Each post looks at a different part of fashion, including a clothing item (shoes), a clothing colour (pastels vs. brights) and a clothing print (animal). The self-style posts will be drawn to a close with an interview about Disney characters from a fellow fan.
Please note that I’m in no way a fashion insider. I’m just toying with my high-street buys and with photography and design, too. The pictures are taken on my iPhone and then touched up on a photo editing app. To find out what the pictures are all about, look out for a cardboard version of me that is used as a picture caption. If you see a snap you like, please tweet or e-mail me if you want to use it – it’s good to share toys.
As you can see, this blog has a whiff of nostalgia. Here are some random stories from my childhood that has influenced the type of music, theatre and film/TV that I enjoy today.
Theatre
My sister and I used to put on a production of Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat. She was nine-and-a-half, and I was four. Our mum had sewn together the famous colourful jacket, which I got to dance in. I took the lead role, and my sister played the Narrator. It cost fifty pence to watch the show. Our other famous performance was The Rocky Horror Picture Show - I can still remember our moves to ‘Over at the Frankenstein Place’ fifteen years on. I’ve seen both of these shows in the last year, so I’m still a fan today.
Music
Obviously the Spice Girls was booming out of any little girl’s cassette player in the 90s. My sister always wanted to be Baby Spice and she made me play Ginger Spice…even though there were three other characters to choose from. We had tacky Spice Girls tops from the market and, again, we created dance routines and then we made our mum record them. Yet this has not scared me for life – last Christmas I asked for their greatest hits album. It’s the best feel-good music to play in the gym and now I can choose which character to be – yep, still Ginger Spice.
Film/TV
Can anyone remember The Baby-Sitters Club? Originally it was a book series, but I was too young to read in the early 90s. Then there was a TV show and a film. My sister and I had them on video and we watched them over and over again – we even got our mum to make the babysitter bags they had in the series. Today I like to go on YouTube and play the theme tune...
“Say hello to your friends (baby-sitters club)
Say hello to the people who care
Nothings better than friends (baby-sitters club)
‘Cause you know that your friends are always there”
Now you know me a little better, please check out my posts! The plan is to update once a day from the 9th of May. Watch this space.
